Identity and Access Management

Identity Mangagement Migration Complete

From Sunday, May 22, 2022 to Monday, May 30, 2022, GW IT migrated to the One Identity Management System. During this migration, new GW community members were unable to claim their GW Accounts. New emails began going out on May 30th, 2022 with a new link to claim your identity.

GW's Identity and Access Management (IAM) service helps to create, maintain, and secure your digital identity while at the University. Your identity is comprised of elements that identifies you as a member of the GW community. With IAM, you are able to use your UserID to access the right resources at the right time, request access to resources as needed, and manage certain aspects of your digital identity in a self-service manner.

What is an Identity?

Your identity is a collection of elements that uniquely identifies you as a member of the GW community.

Your identity includes the following:

  • GWID: A GWID is an alpha-numeric value used to identify you within GW's administrative systems, and is required to access GW IT resources. Your GWID is the letter G followed by an 8-digit number.
  • UserID (Formerly NetID): Your UserID is the ID that you'll use to log in to GW resources. It allows you access to many GW technology services and is an important first step in establishing your digital identity at GW.
    • For users who claimed their GW Identity after May 22, 2022: Your UserID is your GWID.
    • For users who claimed their GW Identity before May 22, 2022: Your User ID is the first part of your GW email address (formerly NetID) and is followed by @gwu.edu, @email.gwu.edu, or @gwmail.gwu.edu.
  • Email Address:
    • For users who claimed their GW Identity after May 22, 2022: Your GW email is LegalFirstName.LegalLastName or ChosenName.LegalLastName, followed by @gwu.edu. In the event there are multiple individuals with the same first and last name, a number will be added to your last name.
      • If you are a student, you will also have an @gwmail.gwu.edu alias, and if you are faculty or staff you will have an @email.gwu.edu alias.
      • Ex: [email protected]
    • For users who claimed their GW Identity before May 22, 2022: Your GW email is your UserID followed by @gwu.edu.
      • If you are a student, you will also have an @gwmail.gwu.edu alias, and if you are faculty or staff you will have an @email.gwu.edu alias.
      • Ex: [email protected]
    • An email alias is an additional email address that will deliver email to your GW email inbox.
  • Authorized Users: All University students, faculty and staff. It also applies to all other individuals and entities granted use of GW IT resources, including, but not limited to, contractors, temporary employees, visitors and volunteers.

Managing Your GW Identity

GW provides resources that allows you to manage certain aspects of your Identity.

Signing In

Single Sign-On

With the single sign-on service, GW community members will only need to login one time per web browser, in order to access all of their applications and services that have been transitioned to the new single sign-on functionality.

Two-Step Authentication (2SA)

GW employs two-step authentication (2SA) to add an additional layer of security for users' identities. This technology leverages something you know, like a password, and something you are/have, like a phone or facial recognition, to confirm that you are who you say you are when accessing GW resources. This makes it more difficult for someone else to log in as your identity.
