Data Classification & Protection

Data classification and Data protection of GW’s institutional data is a responsibility that all members of the university community share. GW’s institutional data is central to the university’s academic, research, and administrative activities.

When institutional data is not safeguarded properly, there is the risk of data loss.  Data loss, whether intentional or unintentional, could have an adverse impact on GW’s operations and reputation.  By identifying and protecting institutional data, you can help safeguard the integrity of the institution and support informed decision-making that drives academic and operational excellence.

The following standards and guides are available for the GW Community to guide on how to protect and manage GW institutional data.

Reclassification

Legal or regulatory changes may require a reclassification of specific data elements, including changes to data security requirements.  In those instances, the GW Data Governance team will partner with the business owner, Office of General Counsel and other relevant stakeholders to reevaluate accordingly.
