Internet Access

GW IT provides a variety of wired and wireless network and Internet services to GW students, faculty, staff and visitors. The division works to support, monitor and optimize network performance while maximizing network security and availability.

Wireless Internet Access

GWireless

GWireless is a secure wireless network that uses an authentication method that works with a variety of computers, Apple iOS mobile devices and a variety of Android devices. GWireless automatically connects devices to the Internet. Once users are connected, they will not have to log in to the system again. With GWConnect, you’ll be able to wirelessly connect your devices to the GW network. For instructions on how to add your devices for GWConnect, please visit our Knowledgebase.

Wired Internet Access

GWired provides students living in the residence hall system with a high-speed wired network connection. Students can sign out equipment for their wired internet connections from the IT Support Center by calling 202-994-GWIT (4948) or by visiting the ITSC Walk-Up Support Office. Most residence halls require media converters to use GWired.

Please visit this knowledge article on more information about GWIred

Virtual Private Network (VPN)

The VPN allows remote access to many university systems and resources that are otherwise protected from off-campus access. It does this by creating a "virtual" encrypted channel from your remote location back to GW's network.

The Cisco AnyConnect VPN Client is being replaced with the Palo Alto GlobalProtect VPN Client. AnyConnect will be retired on August 8, 2023.

Wired Internet Access: Faculty & Staff

This service provides Internet connectivity to classrooms, residence halls and offices across the university, as well as access to University tenants. Wired connectivity is faster, more secure and more robust than wireless internet access. It is also used to support GW unified communications voice services like desk phones, faxes, and call-centers.

Wired connections are $28/month per data jack and may be subject to an additional one time installation fee, if a new jack is required.  The standard connection provided is up to 1GB capable. For adds, moves and changes please  submit a request.

The scheduled maintenance window for this service will be every other Wednesday 2:00 am - 5:00 am. Customers are asked to limit access to the service during this time, as services may be unavailable or unreliable. Customers will be notified in advance if the maintenance window will be utilized.

For support, please contact the IT Support Center (ITSC) at (202)-994-4948. The ITSC can also be contacted by email at [email protected] or by opening a web request.
