How do I connect to the GWconnect Guest Wireless Network?

GWconnect Overview

GWconnect is a wireless network that is reserved for guests of the university (parents, university events, campus visitors, etc.)

Guests that are sponsored by a member of the GW community have the ability to register for a sponsored account, which grants network access for a maximum of 90 days.

Other guests to the university have the ability to self-register themselves for an account, which grants network access for 72 hours.

Connection Steps

For Self-Registration

  1. Access your device settings to connect to Wi-Fi.
  2. Select GWconnect from your available SSID (network) list.
  3. If you are prompted for a "cppm.it.gwu.edu" please accept or trust the certificate. 
    NOTE: The certificate will show as "Not Trusted" because it"s a GWU-generated local certificate and only valid for GW resources. Please accept as long as you see cppm.it.gwu.edu
  4. Open a web browser and you will be redirected to the GWconnect splash page automatically. If you are not, please navigate to my.gwu.edu to trigger the redirection.
  5. On the Splash Page, Click the link in the sentence, “If you are a guest of the university click here to request or reset credentials
  6. Fill in the form and accept the GW wireless terms of use.
  7. Click Register to submit.
  8. You will receive an email with your username and password. If you have selected to have your credentials sent via SMS Text, you will receive a text as well.
  9. Click Login
  10. Enter the username and password given to log in.
     

For Sponsored Account Registration

  1. Access your device settings to connect to Wi-Fi.
  2. Select GWconnect from your available SSID (network) list.
  3. If you are prompted for a "cppm.it.gwu.edu" please accept or trust the certificate.
    NOTE: The certificate will show as "Not Trusted" because it"s a GWU-generated local certificate and only valid for GW resources. Please accept as long as you see cppm.it.gwu.edu
  4. Open a web browser and you will be redirected to the GWconnect splash page automatically. If you are not, please navigate to my.gwu.edu to trigger the redirection.
  5. On the Splash Page, Click the link in the sentence, “If your visit has been sponsored click here to request or reset credentials
  6. Fill in the form and accept the GW wireless terms of use.
  7. Click Register to submit.
  8. You will be presented with your username/password.
    1. Your sponsor will receive an email to approve your access and make adjustments to the expiration of your account.
    2. When the sponsor approves, you will automatically receive a text message.
  9. Click, “Log in”
  10. Enter the username and password given to log in.

NOTE: : If you are unable to receive SMS text messages or are unable to check your email to retrieve your credentials, please contact the IT Support Center at 202.994.4948 for assistance.

 

Summer Residents

GWconnect also allows users to connect to the GWconnect system using their Summer Courtesy NetID and passwords. 

  • The Summer Courtesy NetID will begin with "gwc" (for example, "gwc-abc123")
  • Summer residents will be able to create a guest Summer Courtesy NetID as part of their initial Housing Application process.
  • Summer Courtesy NetiD"s for residents during these months can be created here.
  • The Summer Courtesy NetID Passwords may be reset here.

Guests may also call us directly at 202-994-4948 for direct assistance with a password reset. 

 

Troubleshooting

For all users that are having difficulties with connection:

  • Please ensure that your device shows as connected to the GWconnect SSID.
  • Once connected, you may then open the web-browser and direct to any webpage, e.g., "www.gwu.edu", or "www.cnn.com".
  • The GWconnect login page should then appear. 

If the GWconnect page fails to load, please try the following steps. 

  • Clear the browser cache and history. There are different ways to do this for every different version of web-browser. 
  • Quit the browser, make sure the browser has been completely closed. Do this step for all devices, computer, tablet or phone. 
  • After the browser has closed, make sure that you are still connected the the GWconnect SSID. 
  • Re-open the web-browser and then try to point it to a different web-page again, "www.gwu.edu", "my.gwu.edu or "cnn.com"
  • To get directly to the GWconnect login page you will need to point the web-browser to https://cppm.it.gwu.edu/guest/public/Wireless_Splash.html
  • You may need to try repeating this several times.
